Christina’s Quest for Immortality.

The following is in reply to a request made to Appleby College Ontario Canada seeking any information related to either Christina Louisa Pettard or a Dr. Sutcliffe around the years 1935 to 1937, it reads as follows;

 Thank you for your interest in Appleby College Archives. I received your letter earlier this week regarding Christina Louisa Pettard who visited Appleby School (now College) in the 1930s. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any information pertaining to Christina; however, I was able to find some information on Dr. Sutcliffe, which can answer why a young woman would make the long journey from England to Oakville, Ontario during this time.
 In a Headmaster’s Report from November 7, 1935, it is reported that 2 sessions of the Dr. Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living (one held over the 1934 Christmas and the other during August 1935) gave Appleby School a profit of $2,400. The report suggested that the school make similar arrangements to accommodate Dr. Sutcliffe’s School for the next year. In particular, to cultivate more land for the provision of vegetables for his school.
 Wanting to understand Dr. Sutcliffe’s school, I conducted some research and discovered that he founded a medical movement in the early 1930s called the “Dr. Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living”, which taught a holistic philosophy of physical, psychological, and spiritual health. He believed that our mental health was linked to our physical health and promoted healthy eating. Many schools were established across Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain. Thus, one could conclude that Christina along with the other young woman came to assist and/or learn from Dr. Sutcliffe.
 I hope that I have been able to answer your question. If there is anything else that I could be of assistance of, please do not hesitate in contacting me.
 Best regards,Tracey Krause

So we have answered the question why Christina was making such extensive journeys across the Atlantic in the late 1930’s. She was obviously into a healthy way of living and it may have been the beginning of a popular life style for many just prior to the 2nd World War. What ever the Dr. Sutcliffe method entailed it must have been very beneficial to Christina who lived to be 98 years of age, maybe we all need a bit of Dr. Sutcliffe’s Radiant Living.
