Page 21 - The Chuches of Bermondsey.

The Churches of Bermondsey in Picture.

Six Prints Depicting St Olave’s Church Bermondsey. 1756-1878

Dated from top left; 1756, 1814, 1824, 1831, 1852 and finally lower right 1878. All but one of the prints is illustrated from Tooley Street with only the 1814 print, top middle, seen from the river. The boat in the foreground indicates clearly just how close St Olave’s was to the river, the only noticeable difference between the 1756 and 1878 prints is the adjoining structures added to the left of the tower, which in fact were warehouses.

St Saviour’s Church Bermondsey                                  Southwark Cathedral.

St Saviour’s Church survives today as Southwark Cathedral situated on the original site close to the river and maintaining much of the original structure of the old church.

                                  St Mary Magdalene Church Bermondsey.

St Mary Magdalene church was first established 1290, it was rebuilt in 1690 maintaining its original mediaeval tower. The north gallery was added in 1705 followed by the south gallery in 1794 the last major extension was carried out in 1882.

                                           St James Church Bermondsey.

Considered one of the finest churches of London, St James was built in 1829 as one of the so called Waterloo Churches of London, built in cerebration and thanks to the victory at Waterloo.

In terms of our family, St James would play a significant part in the history of the Bermondsey Pettards, although the four major churches of Bermondsey would all have a part to play.

It will be interesting to discover if we can enlighten more on the family history by having a closer look at all records Pettards associated with individual Churches. I have no idea where, if any where, that such a study will lead or weather it will reveal anymore then we currently know, but who knows.
