More Loose Ends - Alfred and Lilian.
I had first assumed that Alfred who married Lilian Proctor was our Alfred son of Joseph and Annie Pettard who married Elizabeth Waton in 1891. Alfred is seen below remarrying some 16 years later after the death of his first wife Elizabeth; however, when reviewing the certificate we see that Alfred’s father quoted is a Robert Henry Pettard and not Joseph Henry Pettard. Having decided that my first assumption was incorrect, I subsequenty modified my belief and concluded that Alfred and Lilian where not of our line of Bermondsey Pettards.
However, there are details disclosed on the certificate that lead me to question my assumption yet again.
Marriage Certificate of Alfred and Lilian Maud Pettard – Dated 12th November 1916.
The marriage certificate states Alfred Pettard without any middle names which fits our Alfred; secondly his occupation is given Tinsmith which again is the occupation of our Alfred. Father’s occupation is quoted Lighterman this is also the occupation of our Alfred father Joseph Henry Pettard. Father is stated (deceased) as was Joseph Henry Pettard by this time, the middle name recorded, i.e. Henry, is that of our Alfred’s father.
However, the age given for Alfred of 41does not match our Alfred who was born 1872 which would make him 44 years of age at the time of this marriage. We are still left with the father’s first name of Robert, also Alfred status is given has a bachelor, our Alfred would be a widower at this time.
At this point in time searches have not revealed any other record or reference to a Robert Henry Pettard, various Robert Pettard appear but none fit the time frame we are interested in.
Recent searches have brought to light decease records of Alfred and Lilian Pettard, the registered death of Lilian Pettard is listed; Lilian M H Pettard decease 1953 aged 68 recorded Southwark London 5d 779. Likewise Alfred death is registered; Alfred Pettard decease 1954 aged 82 recorded Southwark London 5d 421.
Alfred death in 1954 aged 82 fit the birth date of 1872 that we have recorded for our Alfred Pettard, equally Lilian’s death in 1954 aged 68 is compatible with her marriage details to Alfred dated 1916 with Lilian being 32 years of age, this establishes Lilian’s birth date about 1885 and would make her 13 years younger then Alfred.
The information above does not completely establish that the Alfred and Lilian deaths recorded 1954 and 1953 respectively are the couple married in 1916, but each new piece of information is edging to the assumption that this is in fact is the case. Did Alfred deliberately miss quote his age to make the age difference look less, i.e. 9 years different has opposed to 13 or could it be an incorrect entry made by the registrar. We also establish from the death details that these two Pettards, namely Alfred and Lilian are living in the same borough of Southwark London at the time of their deaths in 1954 and 1953 respectively.
At this point in time we can only hope that more details related to both may emerge with the acquirement of their death certificates.
