Page 25 - Emma Mackglew and Family of Bermondsey.

Thomas Pettard married Emma Mackglew on the 29th March 1841 at St Mary, Lambert London.  As previously stated this is the starting point of our short story of the Pettards of Bermondsey, it would therefore seem fitting to say a few words about the Mackglew family.

Emma Mackglew was christened 25th June 1826 at St John the Evangelist Church, Waterloo Lambeth, being the daughter of Daniel and Eliza Mackglew. Her father Daniel (Jan 1793 – June 1833) was christened at St Saviour, Southwark, he married Eliza some time before 1821.  Just prior to that date a Daniel Mackglew obtained a marriage license in 1820 to marry at Reddington Somerset, so we may assume that Eliza was a Somerset girl, being the custom to marry in the bride’s home parish.  Deniel’s occupation was given has a Hatter living at that time in Carlisle Street, Lambeth, he died June 1833 being buried at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey.

I have often thought that there are family ties between Bermondsey and Somerset, both areas are centers of the leather trade with Bermondsey’s Tanneries and Somerset’s leather cloths and shoe industry, one can imagine some transit of workers between the two areas.  Somerset County is also well blessed with the family name Pettard, although to this date no link between the two has been established.

But back to the Mackglew family, they would appear to be a well establish London family with yet another Deniel, i.e. grandfather to our Emma Mackglew Pettard, being born May 1772 Cripplegate London and marrying Ann Taylor October 1791 at St Saviour Southwark, he too was a Hatter by trade.

The above is with thanks to Linley and Jim Hooper’s of Melbourne Australia and their website covering their family history,  see 'Linley & Jim Hooper’s family history – Person Page 523'.

Notes;
For Joseph Henry and Annie Pettard line see page 2 of this Blog.
1871 census details of Martin and Jane Clements not found, so there could be more to the family.
Robert Johnson, Joseph Henry Pettard, Martin and Arthur Clements are all Lighterman.
Death recorded of a Emma E Richardson June 1927 aged 84, registered Woolwich 1d 997.
Also George Richardson 1920 aged 78, registered 1d 1197.  Known last address for both was Woolwich.
Death recorded of a Martin Clements April 1908 St Olave Bermondsey.

Emma Mackglew was married 1841, her christening date given above of 1826 could not coincide with the year of her birth, for this would make he only 15 when first married.  With the death of her first husband Thomas Pettard in 1846, Emma remarried in 1847 to a Lighterman by the name of Robert Johnson.

The Emma (Mackglew) Johnson Household.
The 1851 census show the family living 26 Salisbury Lane, Bermondsey, here Emma’s age is given has 28 years old, this would make her birth date about 1823 and 18 years of age at the time of her marriage to Thomas Pettard.  This census also shows the family of Emma and Robert Johnson are living 26 Salisbury Lane, the same address given 7 years later with the baptism of Joseph Henry Pettard and Mary Ann Johnson.

The full household is listed has; Robert Johnson aged 35 Head, Sparse Emma Johnson aged 28, Jane Johnson aged 9, Emma Johnson aged 8, Joseph Johnson aged 6 and Eliza Johnson 1.  Here Jane would be Jane Sarah Pettard, Emma would be Emma Eliza Pettard and Joseph would be Joseph Henry Pettard, with Eliza appearing to be the first offspring of Emma and Robert Johnson.  Also listed is a Robert Johnson aged 12 making his birth date about 1839, a date before either the marriage of Emma to Thomas Pettard  1841, or Robert Johnson 1847, so I have no idea who this Robert Johnson aged 12 could be.
The 1861 census shows the family living at 12 Charles Street, Bermondsey, Southwark.  Household consists of head Robert Johnson, wife Emma Johnson, daughter Emma Johnson i.e. Emma Eliza Pettard aged 19 and unmarried; son Joseph Johnson i.e. Joseph Henry Pettard, daughter Eliza Johnson aged 11 and daughter Mary Ann Johnson aged 9.  Joseph Henry Pettard at the age of 16 is a Lighterman, so following his step father’s profession upon the river Thames and the Lighter boats.

Ten years later the 1871 census shows the family living Keeton’s Road, Bermondsey, Southwark. Daughter Mary Ann Johnson is still living at home with her parents, while Joseph Henry Pettard is now married and head of his own household.  However, the household ranks have increased with the inclusion of Emma Johnson daughter and family.  Namely; Emma Eliza (Pettard) Richardson her husband George Richardson and their two children Alice Richardson age 3 and Edith Richardson age 2.

The 1881 census shows a Robert and Emma Johnson living 23 Marine Street, Bermondsey and although all the details do not match exactly, I nevertheless, feel sure this is Emma (Mackglew) (Pettard) Johnson aged 59 and husband Robert Johnson aged 67.  Daughter listed is Maria Johnson, I take this to be Mary Ann Johnson now 29 and single with occupation listed has Dressmaker.  The birth places listed match what we know about the Johnsons, that is Emma Lambeth, Robert Bermondsey and Mary Ann Bermondsey.  Finally for Emma (Mackglew) Johnson we have a death listed August 1887 for Emma Johnson aged 64 registered St Olave Southwark 1d 194, and beyond this date we have uncovered no more of Emma Mackglew.

The Jane Sarah (Pettard) Clements Household.
Emma’s daughter Jane Sarah Pettard married Martin Clements in 1861; we can trace the Clements family with the 1881 to 1911 census.  The 1881 census shows the family living 35 Storks Road, Bermondsey, with Martine Clements aged 42 and Jane Sarah Clements aged 40, their son Arthur Clements is listed 19 years old along with their grandson Arthur Herbert Clements age just 6 months.  Both Martin and his son Arthur are Lighterman.

One note of caution, to date I have not located the family in the 1871 census, so there could be addition family members not listed here.  The family has moved to 176 Rotherhithe Road by 1891 and gained a granddaughter Bertha Clement aged 7, Arthur H Clements is still with his grandparents but their son Arthur Clement is not listed with the household.

The 1901 census shows that Martin and Jane Sarah Clements are still living 176 Rotherhithe Road, however, no other family members are listed.

The 1911 census see Jane Sarah (Pettard) Clements alone at 176 Rotherhithe Road.
.

The Emma Eliza (Pettard) Richardson Household.
As previously shown from the 1871 census, the Richardson family was living Keeton’s Road, Bermondsey with Emma Richardson’s parents Robert and Emma Johnson.  The Richardson’s family at that time included two children Alice and Edith Richardson, what a difference ten years will make.

The 1881 census shows the family living 57 Glyndon Road, Pumstead Woolwich, and head of household George Richardson gives his occupation has a Cooper. The family has grown considerably in the last ten years with offspring numbering now seven, Alice is now age 13 with Edith aged 11, they now have brothers and sisters Minnie aged 9, Henry aged 7, Ada aged 5, Ethel aged 3 and William aged 1.

57 Glyndon Road is still the family abode come the 1891 census, the family has 3 new members Charles aged 8 and Mabel aged 5, also listed has adopted son is Reginald Jarvis aged 3, Emma and George Richardson for sure loved to have children. Alice who would have been 23 along with Edith now 21 and Minnie aged 19 are no longer household members.

With the 1901 census the household is much reduced, only Charles aged 18, Mabel aged 15 and Reginald Jarvis aged 13 are still at home.  The family has now been living at least 20 years 57 Glyndon Road, Woolwich.

Ten more years have passed and still the family are living 57 Glyndon Road, Plumstead Woolwich. George Richardson is now 69 and a retired Cooper,  his wife Emma Eliza is 68 and along side her name she is recorded has being married for 45 years.  This 1911 Census shows that Mabal Richardson now 25, occupation a Skirt Hand, is still single and living with her parents.  Their adopted son Reginald Jarvis is now 23 with occupation given has a Stationer's Assistant.

This concludes our study of Emma Mackglew and her family, from her first marriage in 1841 to Thomas Pettard through the years to the last recorded details we have, those of her daughter’s family Emma Eliza (Pettard) Richardson seen through the census of 1911.  But then again this whole Pettards of Bermondsey sage is Emma Mackglew’s making, being has she is the first mother of our story.
