Page 9 - Johnny Pettard and Family Tree.

Johnny Pettard (1921 to 1986)

John Francis Pettard was at Dunkirk and spent days both on the beach and in the water waiting and attempting to scramble a boat back to England, an experience that was to play heavy on the rest of his life.  Johnny was very much the wheeler-dealer of the family, the original Dell-Boy, not sure whether this ability comes from the Leach side of the family or not, although I remember granddad having a Shellfish stall at one time.  I also recall Johnny visiting us when still living in London, Northampton buildings to be exact, he would always bring goods most of which were not easy to come by in those days of restrictions, rationing and ration book allowances.  By comparison his brother Bill was a more cautious person and would never accept any of Johnnys good natured offerings.  I can still remember with the birth of my brother Dennis, Johnny turning-up with the biggest Teddy Bear you can imagine only for my father flatly refusing to accept it.  About the only thing I can remember him agreeing to, was a raisin box fall of cigarette cards for me, and maybe thats what triggered my passions for cigarette card collecting in later years.
